For the second week in a row the Holtville Bulldogs (0-2, 0-1) tasted defeat losing their Region opener to the #8 Handley Tigers (1-1, 1-0) 42-12. This marked Coach Hunter Adams first home game as the new general. “Handley is a great team and it is easy to see why they are the defending state champions. Their team uses their size and athleticism very well, and they are very well coached and play with great effort and discipline. The effort on our end was greatly improved; our players continued fighting with a disregard for the score. It is definitely something we can build off of. However we missed too many opportunities on offense to be competitive in a game against such a strong opponent. Our offense made mistakes in either blocking schemes, pass routes, or dropped balls on 69% of our offensive plays. We had 11 plays that could/should have been 20+ yard plays but were negated due to self inflicted mistakes. We are a very inexperienced team, so the potential is there to improve that with time”. Adams stated. The Bulldogs gained a total of 168 yards Friday night with Senior RB Jaquille Ellis racking up 76 of those yards on the ground, while QB Hayden Lott was 5 of 16 for 51 yards and 1 TD. “We missed way to many opportunities offensively and we did not get drives going like we needed to” Lott stated. The Bulldogs got the goose egg off their backs in the 3rd quarter as QB Lott found RB Jarmal Kendrick from 15 yards out to give them their first score of the season; Lott would also cash in once more in the 4th quarter to make it a final 42-12. Defensively the dogs were lead by JR OLB/DE Devin Goodwin who finished the night with 11 tackles, but Adams knows the key to success is defense. “Defensively we were in position make tackles all night that we didn’t make, some of that falls on having as many as 6 first time football players on that side of the ball, some of it falls on"want-to". I expect us to correct and continue to build on Friday night's game”.  Adams said. This week the Bulldogs will travel to Dadeville to take on the #2 ranked Tigers, look for a preview this week.
